COMOM Provides Over $1M Worth of Dental Care in Greeley CO to Residents in Need
There is no greater gift than giving back to those in need. These words certainly rang true for local Greeley dentist Dr. Scott Williams of Ascent Family Dental, who gladly donated both his time and his services at the COMOM (Colorado Mission of Mercy) event this year. The goal of this event is to help those who are less fortunate obtain much-needed dental services for free.
COMOM (Colorado Mission of Mercy) Purpose and Goals
On the weekend of October 4th and 5th, the Island Groves Event Center transformed into a large-scale dental clinic. It was here that many local dentists volunteered to help nearly 1,300 patients who were otherwise unable to afford these services. This charitable event was sponsored by COMOM and was a part of an annual event in which Colorado dentists gather together in one city to help residents that are in need of dental care. This year, it was the city of Greeley who hosted the event. The Island Groves Event Center made room for the organization’s 125 dental chairs that would ultimately provide patients with the dental care they were in desperate need of. In an effort to make the event a success, the community rallied together to lend their support. As a proud resident as well as a practicing Greeley dentist, Dr. Williams was more than happy to offer his services.
During the event, patients were taken care of on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because of time constraints, those who were dealing with multiple dental problems would have their most pressing issue taken care of. In some cases, partial dentures were given to patients. These dentures were created in the on-site dental lab assembled exclusively for this purpose. For many, the event was life changing. Restoring a smile not only improves a person’s confidence and health, but oftentimes expands their employment opportunities as well.
Dental Care Professionals Giving Back to the Greeley Community at COMOM
With the help of volunteer dentists, hygienists and assistants, patients were able to receive:
• Root canals
• And dental flippers
For Dr. Williams, this was another opportunity to give back to the community he loves and feels fortunate enough to call home. Raising an active family in this great city, the Colorado Mission of Mercy event is certainly near and dear to his heart. Approximately 200 dentists from all over Colorado participated in the event as well as hundreds of lab technicians and dental hygienists.
In addition to the dental services provided, patients were also given instructions on how to better care for their teeth and improve their oral hygiene. Education is the first step in preventing dental issues and can go a long way in ensuring that these patients have no need to return to such an event in the near future.
This was the 7th year that this special event was held, and more than $1,000,000 worth of dental care was provided over the course of the weekend. A big part of the reason why COMOM was able to accomplish such a feat is because the organization is 100 percent non-profit. The program relies on public donations and the help of tireless volunteers. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the help of the Colorado dentistry professionals like Dr. Williams and every other Greeley dentist that participated in the event.
